World-renowned surgeon Dr. van Bosse surprises Virtual Storytime participants
May 27, 2020
As we continue to celebrate PWS Awareness Month, Latham Centers highlights special guests who have read to our students on Virtual Storytime.*
Guest Reader Harold van Bosse, M.D.: Latham Centers was delighted to welcome Dr. Harold van Bosse to Storytime on Friday, May 8th when he “Zoomed in” from his office. Immediately, he and many of the students and parents recognized one another. Dr. van Bosse is an orthopedic surgeon for Shriners Hospitals for Children (Philadelphia), and Prader-Willi syndrome is one area of special interest to him.
Dr. van Bosse read The Juggling Pug by Sean Bryan, and the kids loved this silly novel showcasing the Pug and his amazing and absurd tricks.
After the reading, Dr. van Bosse opened up the Zoom lines and everyone wanted a chance to ask him a question or give him an update. Many students thanked him for helping them and their curvature in their backs. Other students who had not met him asked about what they could do differently to help their Scoliosis. Dr. van Bosse also responded to a question about how he got involved in the field of orthopedic surgery, explaining that early on as a surgeon, he had a patient with PWS. After meeting other doctors specializing in PWS care, he couldn’t help but want to dive in, learn more about the diagnosis and the people, and become an expert so that he could help families across the world.
Thank you, Dr. van Bosse, for sharing your time – and a wonderful story – with us! To learn more about Dr. van Bosse, please visit: https://www.shrinershospitalsforchildren.org/philadelphia/meet-our-team/harold-van-bosse-md-205.
* Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, students at Latham Centers (and in their homes across the country) come together online for a fun surprise, a good book, and an interactive social hour. Each reader brings something special to Virtual Storytime. Whether they are a legislative or non-profit leader, a professional in the PWS community, or a weather forecaster, they have provided the gift of storytelling and delightful conversation. Throughout the month of May and beyond, we highlight our special guest readers and say THANK YOU.
