Tip of the week: Preparing for Thanksgiving

Celebrating the holidays can be enjoyable and memorable for all of the right reasons if a few things are put into place ahead of time.

Plan the menu and stick to it. Having a big Thanksgiving meal can seem overwhelming, but a written menu for your child with Prader-Willi syndrome can save the day. It will lessen anxiety and make for a safe and fun day for everyone.

Have an exit plan. Recruit a sitter, family member, or staff from a local agency to come to your family event. If the day becomes overwhelming  for your child, you can have a plan for them to go for a walk, to the movies, or back home for extra electronics time and you can stay and continue with the event.

As always, if you know that your child will not be able to manage the crowds, then have a guilt-free day at home and plan to see your family under calmer conditions.
