Staff Spotlight: Christian Ryan fulfills dream of moving to Cape Cod and making a difference

Christian Ryan has been summering on Cape Cod his entire life, but the opportunity to work at Latham Centers brought him here year-round. “I came to Latham because I wanted to do something in my career that I felt really made a difference for people,” Christian said. “I have always wanted to live here full-time, and the fact that I can live in a place I love and do really meaningful work is a true blessing.”

Christian was hired in early 2017 as Residential Manager in Latham’s Adult Services program. He vividly recalls the first day he met the individuals at the house he was managing. “The openness and caring with which they welcomed me into their home astonished me and I immediately felt accepted and knew I was in the right place.” Christian joined Latham’s Training Department in January 2018, when he accepted the position of Staff Development Coordinator.

“As part of the Organizational Development team, it is my goal to instill and promote a culture of learning at Latham that allows us all to share knowledge and achieve goals that will maintain and enhance the quality of life for those we serve,” Christian said. “In doing so, our own lives are enriched.” Christian’s positive, supportive personality is appreciated throughout our organization, and he makes it a point to acknowledge staff members’ individual and collective work. “The tremendous dedication and caring exhibited by the staff at Latham never ceases to amaze me. Incredible things are done here routinely, and it is wonderful to be a part of!”

Director of Employee Training and Development Kathleen vanEsselstyn said Christian’s ability to ‘get the job done’ is impressive. “Whether it is preparing for and conducting a training session or teaching and coaching staff, he uses his past experiences and expertise to thoroughly complete any task asked of him. He helps Latham create the best working and living environment for all—one that is rich with competent, confident staff and happy, more independent students and residents.”

Christian encourages other career-changers to consider joining Latham’s team. “There is nothing more rewarding than helping others. Learning from those you care for and work with on a daily basis is a tremendous gift. Human services allows you to impact people’s lives for the better and by doing so, changes how you see yourself in the world. What we do here at Latham changes the lives of all involved for the better.”
