Latham’s Director of National Outreach encourages other young leaders in local NPR segment

Three of Cape Cod’s young leaders were interviewed last week on Mindy Todd’s radio show, The Point (WCAI, Cape Cod’s local NPR station), and we’re delighted that Latham Centers’ Katrina Fryklund, Director of National Outreach, was one of the professionals selected for the segment.

On Tuesday, February 20th, Katrina joined Christina Bologna (The Cooperative Bank of Cape Cod) and Dylan Fernandes (Massachusetts State Representative) for the radio segment about being in a leadership role while in their 20s and 30s. In WCAI’s “Conversations with Young Leaders” online post, Amy Vince wrote, “It used to be that age was an advantage when seeking a leadership position: it meant more experience, resources and money. But that’s changing. Individuals in their 20s and 30s are seen as more in the in tune with the dynamic, entrepreneurial and digital world, and they are stepping up to take the reins. We talk with young leaders from the public, private, and non-profit sectors about their motivations, challenges and goals for themselves and our world.” Listen HERE.

Katrina talked about why she began working in the non-profit world and whether she imagined herself in a Director role in her twenties. “It started for me when I was in college and I realized that non-profit was where I wanted to be… I’m fortunate to work at a great organization that values youth and values people moving up through the ranks… I was surprised at the support I had. [I asked myself,] how can I always challenge myself and continue to advance through the ranks while benefitting the people at the organization, and becoming a leader on Cape Cod. [I think] that’s one of the reasons why people at the organization trust me…[they] realize that I want to be a change maker, that I embrace the role, and that I want to spread the mission elsewhere.”

The interview culminated with a question about involving youth in leadership and creating opportunities. In Katrina’s words, “I think that we have a responsibility as a community on Cape Cod to support people who are making changes in their community…philanthropy is key to leadership.”

As Director of National Outreach, Katrina works on our Brewster campus with the Admissions Team, focusing much of her time on outreach to the national Prader-Willi syndrome community.
