Latham Golf Tournament brings community together in support of our programs

We had a great day at the 9th Annual Latham Charity Golf Classic last week at Ocean Edge Resort & Golf Club in Brewster. This SOLD-OUT event on Monday, October 15th attracted 124 golfers and 144 dinner guests who braved the rain to support Latham Centers’ specialized programs for children and adults with complex special needs. The scramble-style event included 18 holes of golf and a dinner reception featuring a silent and live auction.

In her opening remarks, President and CEO Anne McManus remembered the late Bob Bernstein who was instrumental in creating the Latham Charity Golf Classic nine years ago. “We remember Bob Bernstein, the visionary behind this event. His leadership and generosity shaped this tournament – our largest annual fundraiser and a unique opportunity for us to spend an afternoon and evening with our community stakeholders, Latham families and friends. We thank his business partner Hal Parton for his continued support which means so much to all of us at Latham.”

This year, we honored the Bebrin family; beloved members of the Latham community for many years. Michael Bebrin is a graduate of Latham School and a current adult resident. Michael’s parents, Steve and Jeri, and Michael’s two sisters, Amanda and Megan, have been enthusiastic, engaged members of the Latham community since Michael came to campus in 2012. Anne McManus celebrated the Bebrins in her remarks:

“This family has really become woven into the fabric of our Latham Community. If we are hosting an event – they are there. I think that if we told Steve Bebrin that there was an iron man triathlon which involved running 26 miles, swimming 26 miles in the shark-infested Cape Cod waters, and biking around the United States, he would be the first to register, and Jeri, Michael, Amanda, and Megan would be out there raising funds, promoting his efforts, and cheering for him”.

Michael’s sister Amanda gave such a touching speech that it was hard to find a dry eye in the room. “We are grateful to be in the spotlight as a family tonight,” Amanda said. “We have always been honored to be Michael’s family, and to have the privilege of seeing all the incomparable people who comprise Latham, in action, transforming the lives of their PWS residents beyond imagination. And we’ll keep fundraising, and my father will keep running and biking in every event you can come up with, so that this life-changing organization can do what they do for as many Michaels as they can. And we’re honored to be a part of that.”

Latham Centers is grateful to all the individuals and businesses who supported our event with their time, donations, and sponsorships. We would like to express our thanks to the entire Latham community who helped make the Golf Classic so successful, and to acknowledge the generosity and support of Jeff Fox of USI, Tournament Chair, and the members of our Tournament Committee, Brad Malo, Dan Chamberlain, Chris Gillstrom Burgess, Stephen Drowne, Amanda Bebrin, Jeff Cotto, Jack Kelly, and Taylor Thomas.

Stay tuned for the fundraising totals, sponsor recognitions, and more photos and highlights of the 2018 Latham Charity Golf Classic which will be featured in upcoming blog posts.
