Latham Centers Staff Scheduling: The Substitute
April 11, 2012
As the schedule coordinator at Latham Centers my job includes multi coordinating many tasks at one time. This includes: finding coverage for open or vacant shifts as well as shifts for staff on vacation, call out shifts when staff are sick, coverage for medical appointments, vocational sites etc. It is an ongoing process of covering anywhere from 80 to over 100 shifts a week. Having a large pool of substitute staff to work with makes things a bit easier. Substitute staff are able to pick up shifts and hours that fit their availability whether it is 40 hours a week or just a few hours on the weekends. Starting as a substitute gives staff the opportunity to work with all of the individuals at all locations and accumulate knowledge and skills from the multiple staff they work with. Often, substitute staff will then apply for permanent positions as they become available.
