Latham Centers staffer Mariel Chance finished as third place female in 25th Last Gasp hosted by Cape Cod Charitable FunRaisers. This 62 mile bike ride begins in Sandwich and ends in Provincetown. All riders were asked to raise at least $625 towards the charity of their choice. After a short three hour and fifteen minute ride Mariel passed the finish line with a beaming smile and cheers from the crowd.
Chance is a Case Manager at Latham Centers who works one-on-one with adult residents diagnosed with complex special needs. She has been at the agency for over two years. When asked her favorite part of the job, she replied, “I enjoy getting the residents out in the community, particularly volunteer work. I really enjoy seeing them interact with the animals when I take them to NESAA, or to the farm. I also like how accepted they are in the community and the sense of pride they seem to have when they care for the animals.”
When asked what motivated Mariel to ride, she responded, “I had never ridden a group ride like that, and I wanted to challenge myself. It seemed like a lot of fun (which it was!), and I wanted to see how well I could do raising a bit of money for the students and adults with complex special needs at Latham!
Many other riders selected Latham Centers as their beneficiary, including Board Member and Spouse Chris Gillstrom-Burgess and Mark Burgess. Six volunteers helped to manage the riders during and after race, including Board Member Stephen Drowne.
