Latham Centers Introduces…Our Technique of the Week!

Hello to all of our Friends, Colleagues and Families! We have been getting a lot of requests at conferences, on-line and from families on some challenging behaviors that are causing stress for the person with PWS or the care-giver. So, we decided to offer some techniques through our blog that you may find useful. Sometimes it will be about the “big” stressors in your day and sometimes it will be minor issues. In any event, we hope you find them useful and please feel free to give us your feedback! Good luck with our first technique!

Having trouble getting your child with PWS to wear weather appropriate clothing? We all know that transitioning from one season to the next can be a huge challenge for those diagnosed with PWS. Getting stuck in a routine combined with issues with body temp regulation equals sweaters in June and shorts in November! Try layering clothing several weeks before the weather is going to change. Put shorts on under pants starting in May and then when the weather turns hot it will be easier to get used to wearing only shorts. In late August start to add light weight 3/4 shirts and gradually introduce the need for warmer clothing for fall. Some kids have a difficult time giving up their winter hats, no matter the weather. Put a bandana or thin baseball hat on under the winter hat- it won’t be as difficult to take off the winter hat if it still feels as though their head it covered. These tricks will make the transition easier and everyone will be more comfortable with that!
