Guest visitors celebrate Read Across America Day with Latham students

Last Friday was Dr. Seuss’ birthday and National Read Across America Day. To celebrate, students at Latham School enjoyed a special day of reading and related activities, including drop-ins by guest readers who joined each classroom.

Guest readers from the community included Brewster Police Chief Heath Eldredge and Coast Guard members Angelina Knesel and Josh Brodeur. Guest readers from Latham Centers included Gerry Pouliot (Director of Children’s Services), Katrina Fryklund (Director of National Outreach), Heather Kelsey (Director of Development), and Dawn Dinnan (Director of Communications).

Assistant Principal Kara McDowell said she and her colleagues are grateful to the classroom guests for taking time from their busy schedules to participate in Read Across America Day activities. “It was a huge success and it put a lot of smiles on the students’ and staff’s faces.” The readers were more than appreciative of the opportunity for memorable moments with the students on a particularly dreary, stormy day. Katrina said everyone in the Nauset classroom was very engaged in the activity that followed the reading. “I loved hearing their uplifting endings – it was an absolute pleasure to work with the students!” Dawn commented on her time with the Race Point classroom, where she felt warmly welcomed by students and staff. “It was heartwarming for me to spend a little time getting to know the students and seeing our talented, caring teachers and assistants at work.”

The March 2nd event was the perfect opportunity to share a collective moment honoring Dr. Seuss and the special gifts of our Children’s Program staff members and students.
