The 2010 “End of Year” Celebration

July 6, 2010

Under a canopy of blue sky and sunshine, Latham Centers celebrated our annual “End of Year” event. Students, families, staff, members of our Board of Directors, friends, community leaders, and advocates attended this joyous occasion to reflect on all the wonderful things our school, and most importantly, our students have accomplished throughout the school year. Through the generosity of our friends at Ocean Edge Resort & Spa, a delicious luncheon was prepared and served to our guests as they shared the day with all of us.

The students displayed their musical talents with songs from Broadway, the Beach Boys, and Disney, as well as dancing and bell ringing. Outgoing BOD members were presented with a token of our appreciation for all of their hard work on behalf of Latham Centers and two members were surprised to learn that buildings will be named in their honor for their tireless dedication to our students and individuals:

Harry MacDonald Cottage
Dr. Russell S. Boles, Jr., M.D. Clinical Building

Congratulations also went to Latham Centers staff Gary Joseph, Amy Smith and Amy Schmaltzer who received the Morgan and McClennen Awards which were based on nominations made by their peers. The awards were presented by Program Directors Mike Marchese and Jonathan Smith. Community awards went to the Ocean Edge Resort, Irene Miller – The Orleans Convalescent & Retirement Center and Miguel Cruz – Mid Cape Racquet & Health Club to recognize their support and efforts on behalf of those we support.

As we reflected back on the year’s achievements, Anne McManus, Executive Director of Latham Centers, also expressed our collective sadness over the untimely death of a member of our Latham staff, Director of Maintenance Tim Semple. To honor Tim’s memory and commitment to Latham, it was announced that a playground will be built on the School Campus and named The Tim Semple Playground. There will be more information to come on this wonderful and meaningful fundraising project. All are welcome to participate. Summer on Cape Cod is officially here. Students are getting ready for swimming, clubs, outdoor activities and adventures. What a great way to spend the Summer!
