Students in new Latham Volunteers Club develop their skills and give back

November 6, 2017

On Friday afternoons, students take part in club activities during school such as Geocaching, Vocational Club, and Watercolors. Our new club this year is the Latham Volunteers, and it has allowed the students to learn about themselves, learn about others, and give back to the community that is so giving to Latham. Led by Physical Education and Health Teacher Monique Williams, the club spent time at the beach collecting rocks and seashells to decorate and distribute as part of the Kindness Rocks Project on Cape Cod. They also decorated brown paper bags for the Kids’ Food Basket, an organization located in Michigan that provides students from low-income families with nutritious meals for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Monique created the Volunteers Club to allow students to see the difference they can make. But it also provides opportunities for them to develop new skills. “Many of the students who signed up for the club have started to see results in what we have been doing over the past month,” Monique said. “It’s a great feeling to see them smiling while learning and growing from their volunteer projects.” For the month of November, the students plan to create and deliver greeting cards to local businesses, clean up local beaches and parks, and prepare for the upcoming holidays.
